Community Coach Mandate

Football Alberta is working to strengthen grassroots football by hosting “Community Sport Novice Coach” Clinics across Alberta.  As per the Football Canada mandate, all coaches must be community coach trained if you are instructing athletes under the age of 14.

The mandate requires each Atom, Peewee and Bantam team’s Head Coach and 4 other assistants to be “Community Sport Novice Coach” Trained.  The training involves completing the Community Sport E-Learning and a Community Sport workshop.

The clinic will introduce you to the fundamentals of football with a recreational focus. Taking this workshop will give you skills and confidence in the key areas of practice planning, making ethical decisions and fundamental technical football skills. The skills learned are ideal for voluntary coaches who have children who participate in football or who wish to assist participants of all ages who are new to the sport.

Football Canada’s “Community Sport Novice Coach” Mandate:

All community minor coaches (U14) regardless of discipline must become community coach trained.

  • 2024: All Coaches coaching athletes under the age of 14 must be “Community Sport” trained.
  • All new coaches with the exception of the head coach have a 1-year grace period to complete the training.

*Coaches who are Certified Competition Introduction Position Coaches or above are exempt from this and are included in the minimum number requirement.  To become a Certified Position Coach, you must submit the clinic workbook, pass the online MED Exam and complete an on-site evaluation.

When logged in to ‘the Locker’, at www.coach.ca, click on MED Online Evaluation, Comp Intro Position link.
