Why Officiate?

Whether you are watching the senior bowl, or a youth flag football game, officials are needed to ensure that the games run within the rules. From high school students looking for some part time work with flexible hours, to adults looking to stay fit and involved in the game they love, officiating can be a great job for anyone! Officiating can be a very rewarding job; it builds character, strengthens mental toughness, and is the best way to stay in shape. Officials are right in on the action, therefore, they see the game in a new light compared to everyone else- one that emphasizes fairness, integrity, decisiveness, and sound judgement. As spectators, we may not always agree with their calls, but the one thing we can all agree on is that they are necessary for our leagues to function.

Officials must:

  • Have discipline
  • Be able to act in a professional manner
  • Develop thick skin
  • Be able to make decisions quickly
  • Have good people skills
  • Be consistent
  • Be able to work with other officials (they are often considered the third 'team' on the field)
  • Love the game they officiate

Opportunities

Within officiating, there are opportunities to move up, travel, and turn this hobby into a part-time career. Many Albertan officials have gone on to officiate in the CFL- there are currently 12 officials from Alberta working in the CFL as of 2019.

If you are interested in officiating contact or non-contact football in any number of our leagues, head over to our contacts page to see how you can get involved.

See you out there!
